World Cup: Portugal meets Spain. Preview
The Russia 2018 World Cup has been filled with great performances so far, with the shift put in by Russia, the stand out performance of all.
Iran has just shocked Morocco, and this is just the second time an Asian team is winning a game at the World Cup since 2010.
Iberian neighbours, and some of the best players on the planet will be on parade.
This is the first blockbuster game of the 2018 World Cup.
Who will come out tops?
In less than thirty minutes, the game will kick off.
Fresh from their quite shocking triumph in Euro 2016, Portugal are without a number of familiar faces from that tournament. Eder, Nani and Renato Sanches failing to put in good shifts during the season, and paying dearly by not getting on the plane to Russia.
On paper, Portugal seems to have a better midfield and attack, when compared to the team that won the Euros. However, they seem to be lacking depth in defence, with their best defender being a 35 year old (Pepe).
Ronaldo started the season at a snails pace, but was on absolute fire at the turn of the year.
Players like Goncalo Guedes, Bernando Silva and Gelson have put in great shifts during the 2017/2018 season.
Spain on the other hand, are in a transitional phase of some sorts, with players like Isco, Asensio and Vasquez trying to stake a regular spot in La rojas line-up.
With the drama surrounding the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, it will not be surprising to see a drop in performance by the Spanish team.
It should be a really lively performance, with Portugal deadly on the counter (Spain as well, depending on who is in the line-up).
Star player(s) to watch(Portugal): Ronaldo, Pepe, Silva, Quaresma.
Star player(s) to watch (Spain): The whole team.
Goals are usually few between these teams when they meet, and I don’t expect this to be any different.
Spain are favourites, and many expect them to win, but I expect them to struggle in this encounter. A draw might be more likely, but I see Portugal nicking this one.
Portugal 3-1 Spain.
